It is not uncommon for infants to stay awake or become fussy from midnight to 3.00am or 4.00am in the morning. In my baby's first month, we have a very difficult time at night as our baby just did not want to sleep even after milk feeding and diaper changing. This difficult path of the parenthood journey only ends in our baby's second month.
There are many factors that contribute to the sleep problem. If your baby is able to sleep very well during daytime, then the most probable reason that he stays awake at night is due to low activity during daytime. Most of us stay in high-rising HDB or condominium, if the weather is not good, your house will probably be very dim during daytime, this may make baby sleepy. If you do not have many family members at home or they do not interact with your child, then your baby will probably sleep happily during daytime.
If your baby had slept for too many hours during daytime, it is then natural for him or her to stay awake at night. Hence, it is very important for you and your family members to interact with your child during daytime.
Furthermore, you should make sure that your house is not too dim as that could make baby sleepy.
In addition, you can make your baby exercise by moving his hands or legs gently, talking to him or playing with him. Not only the baby learns the sound or facial expression from you, but he will not fall asleep easily during daytime. If the baby had enough fun during daytime, he will then sleep peacefully at night. For our case, our baby starts to sleep peacefully when my family members take turns to interact with him during the daytime.
Baby's sleep disturbance at night may be also due to room temperature or wet diaper. You therefore should monitor his neck temperature to ensure that the bedroom temperature is right for him. You should also change the diaper immediately once it is wet. Other than that, you should also record down the amount of milk consumed and the timing of consumption so that you can tell whether it is the hunger that cause the baby to become fussy.
For some babies, seeing strangers or change of nanny may also cause sleep disturbance at night.
Given the correct method, your baby will be able to sleep peacefully at night and will not wake you up often.
