Infants At 5 Months Old: Growth Indicators

This article explains the growth of five-month-old infants in their hearing, vision, touch reception, body movement, speech and language development, communication skills and emotional development.

Physical appearance and growth: The characteristics and features of the baby's face will become very clear at this month. A baby boy at the end of this month will have a weight of about 6.1 kg to 9.2 kg and a height of about 62 cm to 70 cm. Baby girls at the end of this month will have a weight of about 5.5 kg to 8.7 kg and a height of 60 cm to 68 cm.

Speech and Language Development: At the beginning of this month, your baby has begun to pay attention to the way and tone you talk to him or her. Your baby will also pay attention to the syllables in each word. He or she may babble. Although you cannot tell any meaning in their babbling, you will notice that your baby is able to lower or raise his or her tone.

Vision: Your baby is able to see objects that are within a few meters of his sight. He starts to learn how to distinguish between the red, blue and yellow color. A baby at this month may tend to like red or blue. The baby's eyes will move around freely to look at small objects around him. When he sees his mother, his eyesight will follow closely wherever his mother goes.

Movements or motor skills: At this month, the baby is able to stand for a few seconds with the help of adults. If you are supporting him, he may take turns to lift each of his legs like he is walking. With the increased strength of the baby's back and neck muscles, the baby will slowly learn to sit independently. At this month, he has also begun to learn to pick up things with one hand and may put it into his mouth if he is interested in the object.

Emotional and social development: The baby seems to know that he has a name. When you call his name, he may turn his head to look at you. The baby will also be very interested in adults' faces. When you hold him, he will poke your eyes with his little fingers or grab your hair or glasses. Many babies at this stage will also feel anxious and afraid to meet strangers, but they will be happy to see the parents and people that are close to them. If he likes you, he may raise his arms as a gesture that he wants you to hug him.
