Can I eat cabbage during pregnancy?

It is safe to eat cooked cabbage during pregnancy. It should be noted that it may not be safe to eat raw cabbage during pregnancy as this vegetable is easily contaminated by bacterial which can cause many diseases which can lead to premature delivery.

Like other vegetables, you should wash this vegetable properly before cooking to remove pesticides and fungicides unless you purchase organic cabbage.

 

Health benefits of cabbage during pregnancy

Cabbage offers a range of health benefits to the expecting mother.

First, cabbage is a rich source of folic acid. Folic acid is a must-have during pregnancy as it helps to prevent birth defects in the newborns by enabling proper DNA replication.

Cabbage contains large amount of dietary fiber which can help to prevent constipation during pregnancy and improve digestion of expecting mother.  The high amount of dietary fiber also can help expecting mother to prevent gestational diabetes which is actually common during pregnancy. The dietary fiber regulates blood pressure and blood sugar level and reduce chances of gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

Cabbage is also low in calorie and this can help pregnant women control weight gain during pregnancy.

In summary, cabbage contains minerals and vitamins like vitamins B1, B3, B6, C, K, folic acid, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, manganese which are beneficial to the expecting mother during pregnancy. Expecting mother should consume cooked cabbage, but not raw cabbage during pregnancy.
