Many parents-to-be are concerned about the cost of delivery and want a reliable and comfortable class="table" place to deliver their bundle of joy. In addition, it is important for parents-to-be to plan the delivery in advance to provide reassurance and security for the expectant mother, and also to plan their finances for this huge sum of expenses. Hence, this article provides the prices of delivery at different hospitals in Singapore and some of the benefits and facilities offered at each hospital.

Should I give birth at a public or private hospital?

Rest assured that no matter which hospital you choose to deliver at, be it public or private, it will be reliable and safe, with the high standard of hospitals in Singapore.

Nevertheless, it is worth to note that delivering your baby at a public hospital will incur a lower cost than a private hospital, especially if you are a Singaporean citizen. In addition, they have the equipment and capability to deal with complicated deliveries. However, the cons are that waiting times may be longer and visiting hours may also be stricter in public hospitals.

If you are looking for additional comfort and pampering facilities for your delivery process, private hospitals would be a better fit for you. Furthermore, mothers who are covered by insurance and are not concerned about the cost can go for the choice of a private hospital.

Cost of delivery

The prices listed for each hospital is derived from the Ministry of Health and a range of three different bill sizes are given for each hospital. 25% of all patients in the hospital are charged below the amount stated at the smallest bill size, 50% of all patients are charged below the amount stated at the medium bill size and 75% of all patients are charged below the amount stated at the largest bill size.

Public hospitals:

KK Women and Children Hospital

There were 10,279 babies born at KK Hospital in 2017. KK Hospital is the most popular hospital among pregnant mothers as it is known for being able to handle high risk and complicated pregnancies referred from other hospitals locally or abroad. Besides, the perinatal team of the hospital is always on a 24-hour standby with facilities and capabilities for immediate emergency Caesarean section delivery.

The KK Hospital has 28 private delivery rooms and they deliver 30 to 35 babies every day. Each single-bed delivery ward comes with a single bed, attached bathroom with shower facilities, couch-bed and a telephone to contact and update your family members about the baby’s arrival.

Every obstetric ward has a nursery, where specially trained nurses care for your baby. A team of doctors monitor the baby’s health each day. The nursery is suited for babies who need regular monitoring by the medical team, and babies whose mothers may not be able to care for them, such as after a caesarean section.

National University Hospital

There are 8 single-bedded delivery suite rooms in NUH. They are en-suite and are equipped with a television, phone and a reclining sofa. NUH also delivers more than 2,500 babies a year. They conduct practice drills for their midwifery birth attendants and doctors regularly to keep their team up to date with knowledge and skills. They also have well-equipped theatres, high dependency units, intensive care units, and neonatal units, located within close proximity on the same level of the building, to facilitate the delivery of multi-disciplinary care for mothers and their babies during high risk pregnancies.

In addition, NUH is one of the few hospitals in Asia that offer STAN analysis in their delivery suite. STAN is a foetal monitor that combines changes in the foetal ECG (foetal heart tracing) and the conventional CTG (the standardised heart monitors in most units). It helps to accurately detect foetus that lack oxygen and identify babies that require immediate delivery.

NUH also offer a 24-hour epidural service to mothers who require pain relief while giving birth. The midwives will provide one to one support to allow the birthing experience to be pleasant and reduce the need for pain relief.

The plus point of NUH is also that it has water birth suites for pregnant women who are keen in doing a water birth but prefers to do it in the hospital in case of complications. Delivering in soothing warm water makes the contraction discomfort during labour more bearable. Moreover, tears are less likely to occur in water, reducing the need for suturing of the mother's perineum after birth.
